Garden Flowers Cake

My confession is that I really just made this cake so I could show off all of the new flowers I learned how to make. I just completed my fourth Wilton Cake Decorating course, and learned how to make lots of nifty flowers out of gumpaste with a few new techniques.! So this is my culmination. A Stargazer lily, briar roses, a gerber daisy, sweet peas, ivy leaves, little pink blossoms, and stephanotis (the white star shaped blossoms). These flowers took a bit of time to make but were not too difficult and ended up looking pretty good I think- you just need a lot of gumpaste and colored sparkle dusts :)

Redskins Jersey Cake

Mom asked if I would make a cake for their friend Three's surprise 70th birthday party, and to make it redskins themed. This is what I came up with.! Every new cake is a learning experience and a lot of guessing and hoping what will work, but I think it turned out pretty well. An extra element is the football- the indent marks a button which plays Hail to the Redskins when pressed :) My uncle fashioned a recorder with the song for me, and then I molded rice krispy treats into a football shape to conceal everything but the button. I covered the football with brown gumpaste, and then rolled out and cut white gumpaste to make the laces. For the cake itself, I baked three yellow 9x13 cakes. I stacked two of them, and then cut the third to make the sleeves and bottom triangular portion of the jersey. Three likes strawberry shortcake, so I made a fresh, simple strawberry filling. First though, I piped icing around the entire jersey shape and put a thin layer of icing under the strawberry filling so it wouldn't soak into the cake below too much and become soggy. I added the second layer of cake and then iced it with redskins colored icing...Word of warning..it's a pain to make that color. Or at least, to make that much of that color. Any reddish color requires a LOT of dye to break through the hundreds of shades of pink you can apparently achieve, but probably more than you think, so be prepared. I had a lot of red dye but still had to drive to Michael's mid-assembly to buy more lest this be a fuschia football cake rather than a maroon one O_o. I rolled out the rest of my gumpaste and free hand cut out the Three & 70. I used edible yellow markers to border the 70. I also cut out strips of white gumpaste and gold gumpaste to embellish the sleeves.!
