Baby Mickey Mouse Cake

I made this Baby Mickey Mouse themed cake for my friend Katherine's baby shower.! She is about to have a little boy- so excited for her and proud- she's going to be a wonderful mommy with lots of love to give :)
I made yellow buttons and stars out of gumpaste, then applied edible gold glitter to add some sparkle. I also made baby blue and white circles to form Mickey Mouse faces & ears. Then I made smaller baby blue polka dots for the white silhouetttes, and smaller white polka dots for the blue silhouettes.

The actual sleeping baby Mickey with blanket and teddy bear I traced using color flow icing. First, I sketched out the picture with a pencil on parchment paper (based on an image I found online). Then, I taped a layer of wax paper over the parchment paper on a flat surface. I mixed up the color flow icing, and separated it into different containers and used a variety of food gels to create the different colors used. Then I carefully piped over the image again using the icing- this is very time consuming, but ends up with an awesome product if you do it right.! I let everything dry very well over night before carefully sliding the waxed paper across the edge of a table in order to free the decoration. Go slow with this, the color flow decorations are extremely fragile.!
Katherine cutting her cake.! :P I piped a basic shell border in baby blue tinted icing around the edges of the cake, and added all of the gumpaste embellishments. Before I baked the cake, I took out half of the vanilla batter and added a small amount of blue food gel. Then, I swirled the white and blue batters in the pan- hence the swirled effect of the finished cake.!

Breaking Bad Cake

My boyfriend and I have watched a lot of Breaking Bad together, so I thought it'd be fun to create a Breaking Bad themed cake for his birthday.! For those of you who haven't watched the show...get on that. It's good stuff. Anyways, this is the finished product I came up with.
First, I made a silhouette of Walter White & Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad by rolling out black gumpaste, (an edible sugary clay) and cutting all the details with a super sharp knife. Rather than trying to capture all of the precise facial details of each character, I opted to choose a more artsy approach to represent the main characters.
I iced the cake in a light blue- the premise of the show surrounds the manufacturing and distribution of a particularly pure, intense meth that happens to also be unique in that it's blue. Then I placed the gumpaste silhouettes on the top of the cake after surrounding the sides with two shades of blue rock candy that I crushed up. Then I piped white icing as a border around the bottom of the cake, and wrote Happy Birthday in the similar style used in the show (with letters boxed similar to on the periodic table).
Yay.! This is me and my boyfriend.! and the cake.! Hooray. Cute. :)

Redskins Logo Cake

My work bff Jerell, asked for a Redskins cake for his birthday- this is what I made.!
I iced everything maroon first, then placed the logo in the center of the cake. Then I piped a loopy golden border around the edge of the cake and wrote on the front as well. To create the logo, I used gumpaste, which is an edible clay-like substance. I first rolled out white gumpaste and used a circle cutter to create that, and then did the same thing with yellow gumpaste and a slightly smaller circle to create the border. Then I fashioned the feathers out of gumpaste using molding tools and a rolling cutter to draw out a feather shape. I similarly cut out and fashioned the chief using different colored gumpaste and a lot of patience. To stick everything together, simply use a bit of water and the gumpaste will dry together. I put some yellow food gel in a cup of water and then painted it on the edge of the feathers to achieve a faded yellow look. Voila.!
Rell and Tanesha's birthdays were two days apart so we had a collaborative work birthday partayyyy.! Fun stuff :)

Random Red Design Cake

My friend from work, Tanesha, wanted a pineapple cake with red and white designs for her birthday.! I iced the cake with white icing, and then piped her name with red icing across the center of the cake. Then I piped a loopy border around the edge of the cake, and added in random designs- end result:....!

Peter Griffin Cake

I made my cousin Christopher aka Chrissy & here in cake form, "-pher," a Family Guy inspired birthday cake. I have to confess that I didn't have any time to plan or make this cake, so it was an ASAP creative process. I used food gel to color gumpaste, which I cut out in a basic Peter Griffin-esque shape. I added more details with toothpicks and additional traced on food gel, then also created a nifty foaming quahog beer mug. This is Chrissy with his cake. :D Hooray.!
